It’s said that when you measure something, your results automatically go up.
So for example, if you jog to stay in shape, once you start timing yourself, you’ll automatically be running faster and harder, to “beat” your previous times.
And it works like this in anything you do.
I know even when I use a countdown timer here in the office, I get a hell of a lot more work done in any given 30-minute stretch than I normally do without the timer.
It’s true, what you measure gets improved.
But so often, if you’re a competitive person, and you’re a Type A driven for success entrepreneur, it’s hard to evaluate and accept what you’ve done, regardless of how much ground you’ve covered.
It’s sometimes much easier to be kind to others, than it is to be kind to ourselves.
Well, I recently heard a little phrase that helps in situations like this, and I wanted to pass it along to you. Because I think there’s going to be a time when you’ll be able to think about it and benefit from it.
I heard someone once say “What we’re looking for is Progress… Not Perfection.”
And if you measure where you are now, up against where you were when you started whatever it is that’s frustrating you, there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell you haven’t made progress. Even if you’ve run up against nothing but dead ends, you’ve made progress because let’s face it, most things in life turn up a few dead ends along the way.
That’s called “learning.”
Progress, not perfection. That’s all we can ask of ourselves.

Great little phrase you mentioned there.
It reminds me off one of Dan Kennedy’s. If I remeber this right, he said something along the lines of “It’s better to be prolific than perfect”.
Both good maxims to remember.
