Two devoted monks find themselves bound together, traveling by foot across a vast land.

At one point, they’d been traveling without a break for many miles, and they meet up with a woman sitting on the side of a river bed, crying.  The woman turns to them and explains how she must get back across the river to her children, but because she is too weary… she doesn’t think she can safely overcome the steady river currents.

She asks if the monks can please help her across, letting them know how grateful she would be.

The two monks pause and look at one another, and immediately, the older monk picks up the woman and safely carries her across the river.

When the older monk returns to his partner, some time later… the younger monk is staring at him, horrified.

See, one of the many oaths these monks had taken, was to never EVER touch a woman.

And the younger monk simply doesn’t understand how the older monk could, in good conscience, violate this most important oath.

However, too intimated to ask the older monk, the younger monks says nothing, and the two of them carry on for the remainder of their journey.

An hour passes… then a second… and then a third hour.

And all during this time, the tension is building inside the younger monk.  He simply can NOT understand how the older monk had the audacity to pick up that woman and carry her across the river.

Finally, after four hours, the young monk can no longer contain himself, and he gushes forth, “Sir, how could you have picked up that woman back there on the river bed?”

To which the old monk replies, “Oh, are you still carrying her around?  I put her down four hours ago.”

I think we all carry around far too much stuff from our past, for longer than we deserve to.  Our backs are weighted down with a sack FILLED with mistakes, guilty feelings, hurts, failures, regrets over things you didn’t do or paths you didn’t walk down, and fears about the future.  And the sad thing is, we carry these things around voluntarily.  No one’s sitting there with a gun to your head, demanding you carry them around.

Your mind could care less whether or not you are burdened with these issues, or… whether you put them down on the side of the river bed.  However, how your life turns out, the amount of success, love and happiness you experience… is directly related to how big that sack is on your back, and how long you want to carry it around for.

I don’t know about you, but to me… it makes a hell of a lot of sense to put that sack down.

If you were one of the people who responded to my question last week about whether or not I should include cursing in my upcoming book, thanks for your input.

It was interesting, because regardless of which side of the coin people were on, most of the feedback was very passionate. I also appreciate that people didn’t just give me a “Yes” or “No” answer.

Almost every answer was very detailed and expressive.

As far as the results go, it was two to one against using curse words in the book.

I think Jenny Hamby summed it up best when she said (on my blog), “Craig, is your book going to serve as the marketing equivalent of a first date with folks who don’t know you? Or are you just selling it to those of us who have your voice stuck in our heads already? ;-)

If the former, how would YOU act on the first date? Would you be yourself 100% and show all of your warts right off the bat? Or would you be on slightly-better-than-usual behavior and let the relationship develop before being completely authentic?

If you’re publishing the book to build credibility and increase exposure, I’d cut the curse words. Plenty of your personality comes through in your writing anyway, so it’s not a matter of being inauthentic.

My 2 cents … can’t wait to see the finished product!”

And in fact, I’m going to go with this sound advice.

The biggest issue I had was whether or not I was being “real” by eliminating some of the swear words. I do curse in “real life” when I speak, and although I wasn’t planning on filling the book with expletives throughout, I was concerned that if I left them out, some of the meaning or emphasis would be diluted.

However, based on the over 100 responses I received in favor of keeping it clean, I don’t have anything to worry about, as far as my personality or character or “the real me” not shining through.

This has me fired up and ready to kick some ass (sorry, I couldn’t help myself).

I need your help with something. It has to do with my soon to be released book, “How To Make Maximum Money With Minimum Customers!”

Here’s what’s going on. My book is actually done and through the second edit right now. It’s 360 pags long and it’s sitting right across from me on the table in front of my desk, where I keep all my open projects.

I have one more edit to run through, and then it’s on to the marketing. This past week I put all editing on hold to work on a new business I recently started with a partner, which I think I talked about yesterday.

Anyway, here’s my current dilemma: I want to keep this book REAL. In other words, not only have great material, but I want to speak to you, as a reader, the same way I might speak with you if we were in person.

So one of the issues is whether or not to curse in the book. I don’t mean curse on every page, or every other page… or even every Chapter, but I DO curse in person, like many guys. Usually, the cursing adds emphasis to what I’m talking about, and it also lends humor in most situations. In no way is it offensive or degrading, or directed at anyone specifically.

And although I know some people are offended by profanity, many people — especially men between the ages of 36 – 50 — which is my core audience, are not offended by cursing, at all. They appreciate gritty, edgy conversation.
